The SA FIRE Soccer Club is a young organization, but they are looking to make an instant impact on the soccer community in the Alamo City.
SA FIRE, an independent club, was founded in April of 2010 as a means to bring competitive soccer to those looking for an alternative to the big-club costs.
"Soccer can be expensive and not all kids can afford to play," said Kathy Quinones, cofounder and director of SA FIRE. "We tried to take socioeconomics off the playing field to create a club that gives players an opportunity to compete. The kids who come out and give 100 percent - those are the ones we want on our team," said Quinones.
SA FIRE is not just the club's name; it is also an acronym for the club's core values: Sportsmanship, Attitude, Fun, Integrity, Respect and Effort.
"We ask that our players give it their all on and off the field," Quinones said. "Our expectations of the players are to live the SA FIRE core values everyday wherever they may be."
There are currently two teams suiting up for SA FIRE: FIRE Red, playing in the Super II Division, and FIRE White, playing in Division II. This season will mark the club's first time in Super II, but they are never a team to shy away from competition.
FIRE Red placed second in the state playoffs, South Texas 2011 Director's Cup, held in San Marcos this past May and played in the South Texas 2010 Fall Championship semi-finals, in Harlingen, as a Division II team. FIRE White returns to Division II competition after a big win at the Pre-Labor Day Shootout, Aug. 27-28, with a first place finish.
The success these dedicated players have received on the field can be directly linked to a strong all-volunteer coaching staff. To keep costs down and the game affordable for everyone, SA FIRE has committed to using volunteer coaches who are interested in creating winning players and positive young role models above all else.
"We train our players to be respectful; not to argue with the referees; to lose with dignity; and to win with modesty," said Gilbert Quinones, coach of SA FIRE Red. "At this age, it's not always easy, but our coaches lead by example. Our philosophy is to build players up through positive reinforcement."
With parent participation, the SA FIRE teams work together to ensure their place in the soccer community.
"Our parents help create a good environment for the boys, which is demonstrated by their commitment to the club and coaches," said Kathy Quinones. "Without our parents' support, our club would not be where it is today."
As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) volunteer organization, the soccer club fundraises to help offset tournament costs, equipment and other club necessities. Currently SA FIRE is in the running for a $2,500 grant; family, friends and members of the community can do their part to support the club. Soccer fans who want to help SA FIRE win this grant can get more information on the SA FIRE website.
